The 4 Natural Yarns We Love Most (And Why)

When it comes to sustainable fashion, excellent craftsmanship and uncompromising quality, the choice of materials cannot be ignored. Ellemme knitwear has a long history behind it based on the careful selection of each yarn, because it is precisely from there, from the fiber, that the beauty, durability and comfort of each garment are born.

In the following article we want to tell you about the four natural fibers that we use most often, those that we love for their peculiarities and that best represent our philosophy: cashmere, merino wool, alpaca and mohair. Four names that evoke softness and style, but that hide fascinating stories, extraordinary technical properties and, above all, a professionalism that we are committed to enhancing every day.

Cashmere: the elegance of lightness

Cashmere is obtained from the undercoat of Hircus goats, raised mainly in the mountainous regions of Central Asia. It is collected during the spring moult, combing the animal by hand to select only the finest fibers. We love it above all for its high softness: it is impalpable to the touch, almost silky. It is also able to guarantee thermal insulation, retaining heat better than wool. Durability is another unmatched plus, because if a Cashmere garment is cared for correctly it can last a lifetime. At Elle Emme we select yarns with certified cashmere, preferring suppliers who adopt ethical practices in the collection and treatment of fibers. Each garment is designed to enhance the delicacy of this yarn without sacrificing resistance.

Merino Wool: Natural Textile Technology

Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep, originally from Spain but now mainly raised in Australia and New Zealand. It is a very fine wool, with fibers that can reach up to 17 microns in diameter (about a third of a human hair).

In this case the primary elements concern breathability, elasticity and delicacy on the skin. Merino wool iIndeed regulates body temperature and absorbs moisture, maintaining a regular shape even after many uses. We prefer only very fine merino wool, worked with artisanal techniques that respect its natural elasticity. Its versatility allows us to create garments with modern lines but rooted in the classic basic style that distinguishes our collections.

Alpaca: the fine fiber par excellence

Alpaca is a fiber obtained from the Andean camelid of the same name, raised on plateaus at over 3,500 meters above sea level. It is sheared once a year, in a non-invasive way. Over the years we have always considered it an excellent choice for several reasons: it is an extremely soft, warm and resistant yarn, as well as being hypoallergenic and anti-allergic. Alpaca farming is also considered more sustainable than sheep farming, with less environmental stress for the animals and their land, exactly in line with our company mission.

Mohair: a touch of light and movement

Mohair comes from the Angora goat, native to Turkey. It stands out for its shiny and slightly wavy fibers, which give volume and lightness to the garments. A vaporous effect is immediately visible to the eye, capable of creating light, but visually rich garments. It also guarantees a high level of resistance and brightness. At Elle Emme we use selected mohair, often blended with other fine fibers, to create garments with a contemporary character, but with an ancient heart. Each process enhances the texture and movement of this unique fiber.

Raw material matters

In a world dominated by fast fashion, choosing natural fibers and working them with artisanal care is not only an act of style, but of responsibility. Our yarns speak of territories, of respected animals, of expert hands that know the rhythm of the seasons and the value of time. For us at Elle Emme, every thread has a story. And every story deserves to be told and worn.
